The Family of Joseph MOON and Ann BROWN

Headstones of Joseph MOON
and Ann (Brown) MOON.

Joseph, the fourth son of John MOON and Mary FARMER, was born March 20, 1750 on Deep River, Randolph County, NC. On April 13, 1772 he married Ann BROWN, daughter of Daniel and Grace (Thompson) BROWN. Ann was born in Virginia, January 22, 1755. Joseph and Ann had thirteen children, and resided in Randolph Co., North Carolina. In 1796 Joseph and Ann and their children, left North Carolina and went to Jefferson Co., Tennessee, where they lived for several years. The first to leave Tennessee, in the spring of 1808, were Joseph and Ann's sons Daniel and Joseph, and their families. They settled about a mile east of what now is Martinsville, Ohio. In spring, 1809, Joseph MOON, Sr., with his family and sons, William and Jesse, with their families, and accompanied by John MOON, brother of Joseph MOON, Sr., joined the others in the new settlement. By 1811 the rest of the MOON family had followed from Tennessee to join the "MOON Colony" which, with them, numbered 55 persons. Ann MOON died August 31, 1824 and Joseph died April 14, 1833. Their family included 829 great grandchildren. They were buried in Newberry Cemetery at the Quaker church at Martinsville. In the photo, Ann's headstone is on the left, Joseph's on he right. The stones were reportedly still in the cemetery in the early 1980's. However, they have not been seen in recent years.

Eli and Sophia (Shannon) MOON

One of those great grandchildren was Eli MOON, the son of Joseph Daniel MOON and Rachel HOCKETT. He was born on December 17, 1820 in Martinsville, Ohio. He was married to Lydia LAMSON on December 30, 1841 in Henry Co., Indiana, and was later divorced on May 12, 1846. Lydia LAMSON was born about 1826 in Indiana. Eli MOON and Lydia LAMSON had one child, Mary MOON, born before 1846. Lydia later married Elias MODLIN on November 16, 1848 in Henry County. He died on April 9, 1864 at the Battle of Pleasant Hill. Lydia was married again, to Benjamin WAUD. They resided at Holmwood, Jewell Co., Kansas at the time of the 1880 census.

Eli MOON married Sophia SHANNON, daughter of Thomas SHANNON and Catherine WITTER, on January 21, 1849 in Brown County, Ohio, at the home of Sophia's brother, Wesley SHANNON. Sophia SHANNON was born January 15, 1820 in Ohio.

Eli appeared on the census in 1850-1870 in Clinton Co., Ohio. He enlisted in the 79th Ohio Infantry on August 21, 1862, at the age of 42 and was assigned to Company C. This regiment was organized at Camp Dennison from Aug. 20 to Oct. 21, 1862, to serve for three years. During the period that Eli Moon was attached to Company C, it crossed the Ohio river at Cincinnati, that city being threatened by the Confederate army at Lexington. The regiment marched to Frankfort, Kentucky between October 3-9, 1862, and occupied Frankfort until October 26. They participated in an expedition to Lawrenceburg in pursuit of Morgan from October 10-13. They marched from Frankfort to Bowling Green between October 26 and November 4, then to Scottsville and to Gallatin November 25, and remained at duty there till December 11. They moved to South Tunnel on December 11, and remained there till February 1, 1863. They returned to duty at Gallatin until June 1. Eli Moon received a disability discharge on May 9, 1863 in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Eli appeared on the census in 1880 in Montgomery Co., Ohio (National Military Home). He died on May 4, 1882 in Westboro, Clinton Co., Ohio and was buried in Westfork Cemetery (also known as Westboro Friends Cemetery). The cause of death was listed as consumption of the lungs.

Sophia died before March 4, 1902 (the date her widow's pension was terminated due to her death), and was buried in the Westboro IOOF Cemetery (Section 3 Lot 69).

Eli MOON and Sophia SHANNON had the following children:

i. Reuben Dawson MOON was born March 3, 1850 in Clinton County, according to MOON family Bible records. There may have been confusion among researchers as to the identity of Reuben in later records. He was enumerated with his parents, Eli and Sophia MOON, as Reuben D. MOON on the 1850 census for Jefferson Twp., Clinton Co., Ohio. On the 1860 (Clark Twp.) and 1870 Census (Jefferson Twp.), he is enumerated with parents as Dawson (ages 10 and 20 respectively). He is listed as Doss MOON in 1880 (age 30) in Jefferson Twp. He appears as Dawson on the 1900 Census for Jefferson Twp., enumerated with his wife Georgia (b. July 1862). They were married in approximately 1890, with three children, two living. On the 1910 Census, he is lsted with wife Mary (b. about 1858) with no children by this marriage.

Other researchers have indicated that Reuben Dawson MOON and Lawson MOON were the same individual. I do not believe this to be the case. Family Bible records do not list Lawson MOON. Lawson MOON with wife Mary and son Charles is enumerated in Wilmington, Clinton Co., Ohio. Other researchers indicate that Mary Della Franklin (b. abt 1854), married Lawson MOON and lived in Colorado (1905), Clinton Co.(1912), and Randolph Co., Indiana (1920), and that they had a son Charlie MOON who lived in Canton, Ohio.

ii. Lettice Ann "Lettie" MOON was born August 18, 1852 in Ohio. She was enumerated on the 1860-70 census records with her family, however I have no further information on her.

iii. Wesley Mefford MOON was born on July 31, 1853. He married Martha I. "Mattie" LARRICK, daughter of Isaac LARRICK and Nancy PEACH, on January 12, 1875 in Highland Co, Ohio. Mattie was born February 27, 1851, and died December 31, 1940 in Norwood, Ohio. Mefford died April 20, 1936 and was buried in the Martinsville IOOF Cemetery. Mefford and Mattie (LARRICK) MOON had one child, Franklin Bee MOON. Franklin was born May 7, 1888 in Clinton Co., Ohio. He died February 18, 1945. He was married to Georgia A. FAWLEY on February 10, 1912. Georgia A. FAWLEY was born November 21, 1884. She died on May 25, 1973.

iv. John Rufus Delvin MOON was born in Feb 1856 in Ohio. He appeared on the census in 1860-70 in Clinton Co., Ohio. He died on November 2, 1879.

v. Susan B. MOON Susan B. MOON was born on 13 Jan 1859 in Ohio. She was married to James M. NEWMAN on 12 Dec 1873 in Clinton Co., Ohio. James M. NEWMAN was born in 1851 in Ohio.

Susan B. MOON and James M. NEWMAN had the following children:

i. Edward U. NEWMAN
ii. Joseph NEWMAN
iii. Margaret NEWMAN was born in 1879 in Clinton Co., Ohio.
