In 1982, Gram recorded a family history:

Listen to Gram's tape

Dear Family,
This is a record of our origins, as thoroughly as my 97 year old mind can recall. My grandfather, John Johnstone was of Scotch descent. My grandmother was Scotch and English, Agnes Cameron. They were married about 1839 or 40. Five children were born to them - John, my father, Maryann, Willard, Robert and Agnes. They lived in Larbert, Scotland where the family was born and later moved to Glasgow where my grandfather had an interest in a steam packing plant. When my father was 21 in 1880, he came to Alberta, Canada where he was employed as clerk and bookkeeper in a clothing store
